It’s no laughing matter to find you’ve got chipped, unhealthy looking nails en route to work or a special occasion. With this month’s products tucked into your handbag, you’ll be ready for such emergencies. Polish and perfect your digits in minutes.

Slick the Yves Saint Laurent Nail Touch brush pen, $38 across your fingernails for an instant coat of gloss. The design makes it practically impossible to drip (or knock over) and the special formulation dries in five seconds flat. It comes in clear and five sheer pastel shades. The next two products are not brand new, but fabulous for manicures on the run.

Creative Nail Design Solar Balm, $22.95, is worth its weight in gold. The little coin-shaped pot contains ingredients such as jojoba oil and vitamin E, which nourish cuticles and strengthen nails. The almond-scented balm soothes paper cuts and helps them to heal. Tip: Use it as a substitute for lipgloss if you have cracked or chapped lips. It will repair and condition rather than exacerbate the problem, as cosmetics can. If you are wearing short sleeves, rub a small amount into your elbows. Sally Hansen 2-in-1 Nail White Pencil, $8.25, is light as a feather and takes up no space in your handbag whatsoever (in fact you’ll probably forget it’s even in there until you really need it). Moisten the white tip, then run it under the lengths of your nails to whiten and brighten them with ease. The effect is just as good as a real French polish, but without the careful brushwork and drying time. Use the chiselled lid to push back and tidy your cuticles.
