Private health cover for every stage of life

Private health cover for every stage of life

According to the Australian Health Insurance Association (AHIA), one in every four Australians with private health cover will use their cover this year. There is no formula for good health but making sure you have appropriate health cover for your life stage is a simple measure to take in order to give you more control.

Your twenties
You may be young but you are not invincible. In your twenties, it’s advisable to have regular proactive health checks including testing of cholesterol, weight, sugar, skin, breasts, testes and your family medical history. While people in their twenties generally enjoy good health, private health cover can offer great benefits for services such as dentistry, physiotherapy, optical health and natural therapies. Private health cover will also protect you against the cost of sporting injuries.

Your thirties
The focus of your thirties may be bringing up a family. As well as obstetrician and birth costs, preparing for your children’s good health is an expensive exercise. Private health cover is an important safeguard which can end up saving you hundreds of dollars, as well as providing you with peace of mind, knowing that you have your family covered.

Your forties
At forty, you are starting to enter a different lifestage. It is now time to start having regular checks on your blood pressure, eyes, cholesterol, breasts, reproductive organs, heart and bowel. Your children may also be entering a different stage of life where they need major dental work or other medical procedures. It is important to consider these changes when selecting an appropriate level of health cover.

Your fifties and sixties
Testing of medical conditions needs to be more regular at these life stages, and you may require hip or knee replacements or cataract surgery. Many levels of cover restrict these services so it is important to check that you are covered for the things you really need. Now is a good time to upgrade your level of cover.

Some hard hitting facts from AHIA

  • One in six people aged between 20 and 30 with private hospital cover will go to hospital this year
  • Health funds will pay for more than 50 million ancillary (extras) health services this year
  • More than 55 per cent of surgical procedures are performed in private hospitals
  • In 2005, health insurance covered approximately 235,000 orthopaedic operations, 132,000 cataract operations, 122,000 cancer treatments and 97,000 patients who needed cardiac treatment or heart surgery
