Diana has typical age spots that come with years of sun exposure, but she doesn’t let them get her down. With this type of pigmentation, you want the natural skin tones to come through and the make-up to subtly blend the spots. Never go too light with foundation as it will give skin a dull tone. It’s better to go a bit darker than lighter; the same applies to concealer. The make-up artist moisturised Diana’s skin and let it sit before applying M.A.C Fix +, which acts as a primer. The primer helps to dilute foundation, so it can be applied super sheer. He also mixed the concealer with the fixing spray on his hand before applying it to Diana’s skin. “I never use concealer on its own; I always dilute it,” he says. For the concealer he chose a shade slightly darker than her skin and lightly dotted it on the freckles so it looked blended. A light press of very sheer powder set the make-up for the day.
What is pigmentation?
What we call pigmentation is really hyperpigmentation (excessive pigmentation). There are specific cells in your skin called melanocytes that make melanin, and it’s how much melanin they make that determines how fair or dark your skin will be. Why they get over stimulated in some parts of the skin and not others is a mystery.

Every year, Dr Garry Cussell from the Facial Rejuvenation Clinic, sees literally hundreds of men and women coming to his Sydney clinic to see if he can help reduce hyperpigmentation in their skin. “This is the hardest thing to treat,” he says frankly. “There are lots of different causes and you have to be very cautious in the way you treat it. Sometimes treatment is successful, sometimes not, and sometimes it makes it worse. It depends partly on the skin type. On a lighter skin type it’s much easier and less fraught with complications than on a darker skin type; in fact, the hardest skin type is probably the lighter Chinese type.”
There are some causes of hyperpigmentation we do know about and the main one is sun exposure. Years of even moderate sun exposure will result in what we call age or liver spots.
The most common hormone-induced hyperpigmentation is called chloasma (also known as mask of pregnancy) and results from high levels of progesterone in your system. We produce more progesterone during pregnancy, so being pregnant or taking contraceptive pills can cause hyperpigmentation.
