Hi [firstname],

Across the road from my apartment is a row of beauty parlours and nail salons. Every day I pass by them, imagining how great it will be when I win the lottery and get to frequent them at my leisure. Of course, the belief of this daydream coming to fruition passes as quickly as my feet shuffling across the footpath.

Small luxuries

Rather than moping at my lack of cash for vanity-orientated pastimes, I've decided to follow the advice of Notebook:'s beauty writer, Erin Whitty, and have a DIY spa at home (see 'A luxury spa at home' page 68 of our August issue). The recipe for a zingy body scrub using lime and ginger can be found here, and it is so simple to make there is no excuse not to try it. So schedule some time for yourself, retreat to the bathroom and make pampering your priority.

Home truths

At least three of the Notebook: staff members are in the process of selling or moving house – it seems finding a dream home is on everyone's mind. Most real estate agents will suggest when you are selling, you should keep your house as de-cluttered as possible to let the potential of the property shine through. If you're seeking ideas for your abode, see our decorating story, 'Natural wonder', on page 138 of our August issue, which showcases a home with timeless appeal and unique touches that are sure to inspire. Having a vase of fresh flowers adds cosy charm to a room, and with daffodils currently in season, their bright yellow petals will light up even the darkest of corners. You can learn more about growing this cheerful bloom in 'Days of daffodils', page 131 of our August issue. And for more professional home presentation ideas, www.realestate.com.au has a great guide to getting your house ready. Click here to read more. Also, if you're relocating to a different state or further afield, revisit our feature article 'Moving cities' to enjoy stories and advice on finding your feet in a new town.

Just desserts

With frosty winter evenings making way for milder spring nights, it is our last (official) chance to indulge in the warm comfort foods of the season. This month, our food editor Sarah Hobbs has outdone herself by creating an array of spongy hot puddings that will instantly make your mouth water (see 'Hot and saucy', page 106). If the idea of chocolate and hazelnut soft-centred pudding gets your tastebuds twitching, then click here to get the recipe right now. Here's an idea: eating warm chocolate pudding and reading the latest issue of Notebook:. Bliss!
