Hi [firstname],

I'm a recent addition to the Notebook: team, having started here as editorial coordinator just two months ago. I am really enjoying my new role, which includes lots of interaction with our readers. My predecessor, Erin, is now our beauty writer - and this month she teaches us the art of pout perfection. To read her report on how to achieve beautiful lips, see page 69 of our June issue, out now. In my experience, I've found I am the kind of person who works best among good characters, and I'm pleased to report the Notebook: office has a lot of them. Throughout the day, giggles far outweigh groans and our prescription for stress is an M&M from our food editor Sarah's desk.

Heirlooms

I've been thinking about the women in my family lately. Both my grandmother and mother were working parents, and now I am a little bit older I can really appreciate the extra care they would take to make things from scratch. I remember my late granny, Audrey, could craft anything, cook anything and grow anything - and do it all without crinkling her classically elegant clothes (rather reminiscent of our 1940s-inspired outfits on page 51). These memories of my multi-tasking matriarchs made me realise I am lacking in the traditional skills department. Even though it is fun now, when I am 50, I probably won't consider catching grapes in my mouth a skill to pass on. I am going to knuckle down and follow the instructions to knit Francesca's knee rug (page 26), cook Sarah's scones (page 116), and grow gorgeous flowers in winter (page 156).

Family distance

I can relate to this month's article by staff writer, Laura, about loved ones living far away ('So close, yet so far', page 172). I have recently moved to Sydney from the Central Coast with my partner Chris, leaving my mum and close friends a minimum of two hours' drive away. To add to the distance, my elder brother is training to be a pilot in South Australia and my sister's family are living in Far Northern New South Wales. My little dog, Pippi, doesn't understand why I had to move and now when I visit Mum's house her puppy eyes punish me with a judging stare. With modern technology, I can email and telephone everyone with the latest news, but there is nothing like sharing laughter with your family together in the same room.

Rental renovations

Like many, I've always daydreamed about decorating my own home, and I thought moving into an apartment would finally give me that chance. But because I'm renting, my limitations aren't being measured by my imagination, but rather by my landlord. Making a leased space feel like your own has long been the bane of a renter's existence. But as Georgia Madden explains in this month's home feature, 'Decorating for renters', there are some very clever ways to furnish your flat the way you want - without busting your bond. For a little inspiration, see her story on page 150 of our June issue.
