Bedroom ideas: pillows and quilts

Make your bedroom a luxurious, restful escape with unique decor and gorgeous linens. Mia Asker offers some inspirational ideas to get you started.

Sleeping beauty
Feel like a princess as you crawl in to bed with this luxurious setting. Start by layering sateen with silks. Add lots of cushions and pillows and make sure you use real down bolsters with high down count. Decorate your boudoir with Venetian glass and mirrors, frames with photos of your loved ones, and subtle changes in textures and colours. Add heavy linen curtains to keep the cool out and lay pure sisal carpet on the floor. Keep some beautiful lingerie in your cupboard to complete the picture.

Design matters
To make a large room a cosier sleeping space try placing your bed in the centre of the room. It will fill the floor space and make the walls look closer together. Face the bed in a direction that you are comfortable with: towards the windows if you like watching the midnight sky and enjoy the first rays of sunshine in the morning, or towards the doorway if you like to have your bed on display as people walk down the hallway. Subtle shades create a pleasant sleeping environment, while a splash of red adds a warm feel.

Don’t be afraid of mixing and layering your bedlinen in winter. For most of Australia the temperature throughout the season tends to be unpredictable so a few extra blankets and throws will come in handy. Select quality doonas and pillows for longevity. The Ultralux and Ultradown ranges of quilts and pillows from Sheridan (see below) are designed for long-lasting support and comfort.

Ultralux pillow and quilt:
100 per cent cotton sateen cover; 100 per cent Ultralux fibre filling.

Advantage

  • Ultralux fibre is designed for resiliency, providing long-lasting support and comfort.
  • Ultralux fibre creates a warm and light quilt with maximum ability to trap air in its layers.

Care

  • Fill the washing machine first and balance it with two pillows (or towels if only washing one pillow).
  • To wash quilt, use a large machine (7-8kg). Line dry, hanging over several lines.

Ultradown pillow and quilt:
Silk/cotton cover; white goose down and feather blend filling (85 per cent minimum down cluster).

Advantage

  • High thread count and silk acts as a dust mite barrier.
  • Supreme quality white goose down ensures plump and soft pillows and creates the warmest insulation for quilts.

Care

  • Dry clean pillow cover.
  • Machine wash pillow, allow to dry naturally then tumble dry on medium to cool.
  • Dry clean quilt.
