Interval training was originally developed to improve the fitness and performance of already highly trained athletes. In some ways, the early stages of a fitness regimen can be the hardest, in other ways the easiest. Starting from a point of low fitness means you have nowhere to go but up – even moderate amounts of exercise can make a difference very quickly.
The problem is that at a certain stage, fitness levels and results tend to plateau. Your body has adapted to a high level of exertion, and getting to the next step can prove difficult. This is where interval training comes into play. Put simply, interval training is about developing a program that alternates bursts of high-intensity activity, usually running, with low-cardio exercise. A program can be as simple as consecutive periods of running and walking, or it can be a complex circuit that integrates running with strength-building and weight-bearing exercise.
