Every parent knows the tug of love between a child’s desire for independence and a parent’s duty to protect and nurture. Walking the line is not easy and we all need a little guidance from time to time. Obviously there are areas that are utterly non-negotiable and water is one of them.
There comes a time when every parent must take a deep breath and let their child walk unaccompanied. The question is when, and how to prepare? And what about parties, sleepovers and the first disco? Your own instincts must guide you first, but outside advice can be of enormous benefit.
Two websites that offer solid, well-assessed advice and links to other sites are: www.raisingkids.net and www.kidsafe.com.au.
