Eco tip: clean your fridge
Every six months, undertake a thorough cleaning of your fridge to keep it odour-free and hygienic.
Turn the temperature control off then unplug your fridge. Remove all food (store perishables in a cooler), discard out of date items and place uncovered foods in airtight containers. Remove shelves, racks and drawers then wash in hot soapy water and dry.
Using a soft sponge, wipe down all surfaces with a solution of 2 cups water and 2 tbs bicarbonate soda (pay particular attention to door seals). Rinse then dry with a clean tea towel.
Scuffs and stains can be removed by rubbing with non-abrasive tooth-paste, while grease spills will succumb to a little lemon juice and water.
If it’s a modern solution you’re after, then look to the latest Samsung range of fridges, with their unique Silver Nano technology – a special coating in the fridge prevents airborne bacteria and mould from forming.
Sweet smelling
To prevent odours from lingering, store an open packet of bicarbonate soda in your fridge.
