Our design aesthetic is so often geared toward bright, breezy summer days that cold, rainy winters can come as a bit of a shock. Rather than shivering through the season, look at different ways to add warmth and comfort to your existing scheme.
Total refurbishment is impractical, wasteful and expensive, but introducing elements of winter style doesn’t need to break the bank. Colour is an important factor, both practically and from a psychological perspective. As we spend more time inside when it’s cold, the items we use need to be able to withstand greater wear and tear. Dark colours create a sense of warmth in areas where white can seem chilly and uninviting.
Painting a corner of your room in a strong shade will add a sense of depth and comfort to the decor and help create a cosy nook in which to read or relax.
Layering your bed with blankets and cushions is a simple, practical way to add
warmth. Choose lightweight, natural fibres, especially wool and cashmere, and allow air to circulate to avoid the room feeling weighed down or stuffy. Black, grey and charcoal work well with neutral colour schemes and lend a sophisticated edge to any room. Opulent shades such as eggplant, royal blue and deep sage-green are also popular this season.
For instant, soothing heat, you can’t go past a hot water bottle. For comfort and to help prevent burns, always use a cover.
