Secret admirers were the original beneficiaries of Valentine’s Day cards and gifts.

What began as a way to make your feelings known has turned into a day to lavish gifts on your partner. For the many who feel uncomfortable with commercialism, these delicate heart cards are a sweet and subtle way to say ‘I love you.’ Arriving as a neat package, the heart only appears when the final folds unfurl and the gift placed in the centre is revealed.

Wrap a treat

  1. Cut two hearts from different sheets of paper, one slightly smaller than the other. Place the smaller heart on top of the larger one and secure in place with a couple of dabs of glue. Place a small gift (perhaps chocolate, or a ring) in the centre of the heart.

  2. Fold the sides in first, making a clean fold just inside the peak of each upper curve. Fold the top third of the heart down and, lastly, the bottom third up, tucking the point of the heart into... read on below advertisment

the cleft where the curves meet.

  3. Secure the heart package with a ribbon tied in a neat bow.
