Travelling light: the art of packing
The art of packing is mystery worth mastering. The popularly held advice is that all you need to go from beach to bar are a couple of sarongs and a pair of bathers. For most of us, however, this type of minimalism is never enough!
So, it’s not so much a matter of packing less as packing smart. Careful folding reduces volume, so you can take more. Layers of tissue help prevent wrinkles and rips. Shoes can be wrapped to prevent damage (wear your bulkiest pair on the plane). But remember: you still have to get it all home. We love this clever laundry bag from The Laundry Bag – it unpacks Tardis-like and has special lined pockets for dirty socks and smalls.

I've discovered that rolling clothes (preferably rolling a t-shirt first, then the worst creasing item over that), as opposed to folding, reduces creases dramatically. I also use little zip lock bags for all those little items, and if you can use luggage that expands, save the extended part for the trip home, as you always seem to return with loads more than you went with. I also wrap my shoes in plastic shopping bags, they also double as dirty laundry bags. Try to pack co-ordinating items, including shoes, so that with a quick top, shirt, skirt change &/or belt or jewelery change, you can go from day to night, casual to dressed up.
Take as little of the 'large' toiletries with you and buy when you arrive, or use small roll-on deodorant, hair spray, etc. Better still, I try to buy 'small' in toothpaste, deodorant & all other toiletries and keep them in my travel kit, only for travelling. I also take a small amount of washing powder (in a zip lock bag) with me, for rinsing out smalls .... saves on taking additional clothing & returning with heaps of washing.
Use sachets for shampoo & conditioner .... as well as a hair treatment if going to be doing a lot of swimming.
I also like to keep a face cloth dampened with water & lemon juice, in a zip lock bag, in my hand luggage, for those times when my hands feel dirty during travel ... & before & after eating ... & when out shopping in foreign places. It is also good for a quick face freshener in warm climates.
